senior learning experience (lx) designer

As project lead, I use Design Thinking and Design Research as my approach to support complex educational ideas and endeavors. Below, you’ll find a brief description of the latest projects I have been working on. Visit the Michigan State University Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology website to find out more about our overall project portfolio.

I am currently leading this project in collaboration with my colleague Scott Schopieray from the College of Arts and Letters to provide an introduction to coding in Apple’s language Swift through a challenge-based curriculum. I use specific design methodologies both for project management and for the instructional content of the lab.

PSY 101

This project is part of the broader, nation-wide reform on large intro courses in higher education. As team lead on this project, I used a variety of design processes from intent statement to insight clustering to provide support to the PSY department as they re-envisioned the PSY101 experience for students at Michigan State University.

In this project, I led the redesign of the mission and vision for the Experience Architecture (XA) major on campus. Over the course of a few months, I created a series of design sessions centered around futures thinking and trends explorations, along with conducting student focus groups to help the XA group think about their goals as a new major.

I have co-led the Hub Grad fellowship for the past two years with graduate students ready to influence the future of higher education and develop as teacher-leaders and public scholars. We use design methodologies to expose fellows to intellectual spaces at MSU where innovation in teaching and learning is occurring.

I co-teach the Walter & Pauline Adams Academy of Instructional Excellence and Innovation with Patti Stewart and helped re-design it to integrate digital teaching portfolios at its core. We re-designed the program to bring together a cross-disciplinary group of faculty and academic staff for a year-long fellowship focused on teaching and learning.

Design research is at the core of the Lilly Fellowship, where fellows engage in a year-long exploration of robust scholarship on effective practices in university teaching. I co-teach this fellowship, and we are in the second iteration of the new curriculum that my colleague Patti Stewart and I re-designed to support future leaders at the institution.
